Smoke & Soul Fest is a Kansas City BBQ Society sanctioned competition. It is a community event that includes live music by Steve Frame and Diane Lynn of Buffalo Scout, vendors, a beer trailer, the BBQ competition, a Kids Q competition and a Kids Alley full of fun activities for families. The tasting tent is open from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm with the competitors providing their extra competition meat and other meat they prepared for us. It costs $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12 to enter the tasting tent, but the Festival is free to attend. There are interactive family activities throughout the day and a children’s sports helmet giveaway including bike and skateboard helmets. Our goal with this event is to raise awareness for brain injury prevention, host a unique annual community event and to raise money to benefit the Brain Injury Advocates of Wyoming.
BIAW’s mission is to support, inform and assist brain injury survivors and their caregivers and loved ones. We provide a number of services including case management and representative payee services, support groups, information and referral, and brain injury education. We work hard on brain injury prevention including helmet giveaways to children and the Durable Medical Equipment Loan Closet (wheelchairs, walkers, etc.). Funds from the Smoke & Soul Fest go toward our prevention activities as falls are the leading cause of brain injury in the young and the elderly.
